Map of the Psyche, 1994
Serge Polakoff

The assembly of the four building blocks previously described resulted in the Map of the Psyche which concludes the series of five works of art collectively titled with the same name.

The first building block, Map of the Inner World, presents a universal template of a psychological portrait of the “subject.” It is based on Jung’s concepts of self, ego, shadow, persona, anima and animus, as well as consciousness and the personal and collective unconscious.

The second building block is Conscious Object, a symbolic representation of the four types of objects, associated with the four elements whose archetypal shapes and colors are harmoniously united together.

The third building block is Subconscious Object, in which the graphic image of a rose and its subtle perfume symbolizes the four types of subconscious objects.

The fourth building block is Connections, with its five symbolic relationships between the subject and the object that reveal a common configuration of the invisible on three levels: the pantheon of Greek gods (“Supercosm”), the universe represented by its planets (Macrocosm), and the human psyche (Microcosm).

A separate compilation involving three of the four building blocks resulted in Gods, Planets and Psyche (pp. 68-69).
